How to Prepare for College

Going to College for your first time can be an enlightening but challenging task. Students need to be focused and take college seriously when it comes to school work, as it does not compare to secondary school. A different work load, a busy schedule and working independently are just some of the challenges facing you.

In order to help you through this adjustment process, here are some steps to take when preparing for your first year in college:

  • Stay productive over Summer. This way you will be mentally prepared and you won't lag behind when dealing with the faced paced college workload.
  • Ensure you have applied for your EMA (see DirectGov for details).  This could provide £30 per week while you study at college.
  • Attend pre-induction day on Thursday 1 July 2010
  • Make sure you have sent back your Consent Form to indicate you have accepted your place.
  • Ensure you have read your enrolment letter and know what day and time you should attend college.  Make sure you bring the documents listed.
  • Budget accordingly for College (see this About.com page for a budget form).
  • Learn how to be organized, and stay organized. This is one of the keys to succeeding in college.
  • Decide on your enrichment activity and make sure you find out when it starts.
  • If you want to join a sports academy - make sure you know when the induction sessions are in August 2010
