Job Title: HORTICULTURE INSTRUCTOR
Responsible to: OLASS Manager, HMP ErlestokeColleagues: Other teaching staff in Prison Education and at Strode College
Job Purpose: To instruct trainees on the Level 1 Horticulture course.
Specific Responsibilities:
1. To contribute to the delivery and assessment of the horticulture training in line with local and national certificate requirements up to NVQ Level 2 (skills tested).
2. To assist with and contribute to the integration of key and basic skills accreditation alongside the main qualification aims.
3. To work with other members of the education team and ensure that the Prison’s targets for achievements and accreditations are met.
4. To supervise all activities relating to Horticulture training.
5. To organise and develop effective resources to support the curriculum.
6. To keep up to date with prison issues and national trends relating to Horticulture training.
7. To advise the OLASS Manager of any changes and developments relevant to the curriculum content.
8. To advise on future staff development needs for Horticulture operations.
9. To maintain records on inmates’ work, achievements, targets and progress.
10. To prepare lesson plans. To prepare an individual learning plan for each student on the course.
11. To implement the College Quality Assurance procedures for Prison Education.
12. To attend and contribute to meetings in the Prison and College as required by the OLASS Manager.
13. To liaise closely with relevant employers in the region with a view to enhancing the potential for inmates to secure employment on release.
14. To participate in the College’s staff development and Review and Development procedure.
15. To implement the College and Prison Health and Safety, Equal Opportunities and Personnel policies.
16. To comply with the requirements of the Data Protection Act 1998, i.e. it is the responsibility of individual staff members to protect data and to take all reasonable steps to ensure all data is kept securely.
17. To fulfil the security requirements of the Prison with regard to prisoners, equipment and professional conduct.
18. To co-ordinate student entries for external examinations/assessment and liaise, as appropriate, with awarding bodies.
19. To attend staff meetings and training events.
20. To undertake such professional duties as appropriate to the post which, may be determined by the OLASS Manager.
21. To internally verify another course in the Prison.
22. To undertake duties as requested by the OLASS Manager at times when the Horticulture course is closed.23. To liaise with prison staff to ensure the smooth running of the centre.
Person Specification:
Candidates should be able to demonstrate the following:Attainments Academic:
Essential:
A relevant teaching/training qualification or commitment to work towards accreditation.
GCSE Maths & English grade A-C or equivalent
Level 2 qualification in Horticulture
Desirable:
D32/33/34 or A and V Awards or prepared to work towards equivalent.
Level 3 qualification in HorticultureAttainments Occupational:
Horticulture experience (5 years experience or more desirable)
Other related certificates
Management/supervisory experience
Experience of delivering and assessing Horticulture training to local and national standards
Assessor for certificate of competency in use of machinery (desirable)Desirable Skills/Abilities/Competencies:
Experience of working with disadvantaged groups, particularly those seeking accreditation
Organisation, resourcing and the delivery of training within a prison environment
Effective oral and written communication skills
Experience of developing and maintaining records
Experience of fostering good working relationships with and between different groups
Ability to identify and address the different needs of the prison community
Ability to initiate new ideas/respond to changes and suggest any staff development requirements
Ability to provide training and staff development where required

Willingness to be flexible as the demands of such a role may require varying work patterns at certain times of the year.Terms and Conditions:
The post will commence after security clearance has been obtained.
The post holder will be responsible to the Prison Governor on all matters affecting security and prior to taking up the post will be required to submit name, address, date and place of birth for security clearance. The Home Office is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act and any convictions, spent or otherwise, must be declared.The successful applicants will be required to apply for an enhanced disclosure from the Criminal Records Bureau. The post is for 37 hours per week and includes a minimum of 1200 instruction hours per year. Holiday entitlement is 5 weeks per annum + Bank Holidays.
The appointment is at Scale 6 - £22,737 to £25,262 per annum. It is a monthly paid appointment and salary will be paid directly into a bank or building society account.
The postholder will be brought automatically into the Somerset County Council Local Government Pension Scheme but has the opportunity to opt out. Contributions are 6.5% of salary.
Sick leave will be in accordance with the procedures laid down by Strode College Governing Body.
The post is subject to a probationary period of 6 months. We regard this as a supportive procedure but point out that unsatisfactory performance during the probationary period can lead to the contract being terminated with 2 weeks’ notice.
