AV Technician/Learning Centre Assistant (Fixed term to 20th July 2012)

Responsible to: Learning Centre Manager

Job Purpose: To support students and staff in their use of audio-visual equipment/ IT and to assist with the provision of Reader Services.


Key Tasks and Responsibilities:

1. To assist with the lending of equipment to students and staff, including:

* Issuing AV equipment such as SLR cameras digital cameras, notebook computers etc., maintaining records and chasing non-returns.
* Supporting users
* Making audio and video recordings and cataloguing programmes
* Other tasks related to audio/video recording, and resources.

2. To assist with the maintenance and repair AV equipment including
* Checking audio-visual equipment is in good working order and it is safe to use
* Providing support for and maintaining AV equipment in classrooms and offices.
* Completing minor repairs, and arranging for the repair of equipment, which cannot be mended in-house.
* Testing equipment for safety (PAT).

3. To support staff and students in their use of information and learning technologies and other equipment including:
* Inducting students to ILT and other facilities in the Learning Centre.
* Introducing software packages such as Microsoft Office, Publisher etc., including Careers software.
* The use of the Internet, e-mail and other communications technology.
* On-line learning systems such as the College VLE etc.
* Printing, scanning, photocopiers etc.

4. To support the development, administration and use of the Intranet and the electronic library, and online learning systems including the VLE (Moodle).

5. To work with the Learning Centre Team to provide Reader Services, including:
* Helping staff and students with their information needs.
* Showing students how to search the library catalogue, using the Learning Centre's Library Management System (Heritage IV).
* Producing user guides, information sheets, web pages, posters, resource displays etc.
* Issue, return and renew books etc, receive fines, deal with reader queries, requests and reservations.
* Shelve items regularly, and keep shelves tidy.
* Deal with enquiries, both in person and over the telephone, for the Learning Centre and also general college queries.

 


6. To assist with Acquisitions, including:
* Processing books, DVDs, etc.
* Data entry and retrieval from Heritage.
* Preparing stock and book lists.
* Stock selection and editing.

7. To have responsibility for an area of work in the Learning Centre,

8. Supervising students using College facilities, including:
* Maintaining a quiet working atmosphere.
* Monitoring student use of the College network.
* Keeping the Learning Centre tidy.

9. To support College admissions, induction and curricular network administration for students and staff.

10. To adhere to the College Health and Safety, Equal Opportunities and Safeguarding Children and Vulnerable Adults Policies.

11. To comply with the requirements of the Data Protection Act 1998 i.e. it is the responsibility of individual staff members to protect data and to take all reasonable steps to ensure all data is kept securely.

12. To undertake other duties appropriate to the level of the post as requested by the Learning Centre Manager or Head of Learning Resources.

Person Specification

Candidates should be able to demonstrate the following:
Academic:
* A good level of general education to at least A Level standard or equivalent.
* Information & Library Services qualification or equivalent (desirable).

Occupational:
* At least three months successful and relevant experience in a similar area (desirable)
* Have a good technical knowledge of photography and video (essential).
* Successful and relevant experience using PCs (essential) and Macs (desirable)
* IT Qualification at level 3 (desirable)

Special aptitudes/skills:
* Have an interest in Learning Resources and the education of young people.
* Excellent knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite of applications.
* Confident to advise others about the safe use of the Internet, copyright and plagiarism.
* Prioritising activities and developing simple but realistic plans to achieve them.
* A basic knowledge of troubleshooting simple hardware faults and experience of using on-line databases.
* Confident delivery to another person at the appropriate level for the receiver.
* Self-confidence to deal with 16-19 year olds.
* Working with other team members and contributing constructively.
* Making constructive suggestions about own work and taking action to implement them.
* Completing everything to do with a task no matter how much detail is involved.
* Remaining calm and polite, no matter what the pressures.

Personal qualities:
* Patient and enthusiastic.


Terms and Conditions:

1 The appointment will commence as soon as possible and is fixed term to 20th July 2012.

2 The salary is from £15,003 - £15,721 pro rata.

3 This post is for 20 hours per week.
Actual hours: 1.00 p.m. to 5.00 p.m. Monday to Friday.

5 It is a condition of appointment that the salary will be paid directly into a bank or building society account.

6 The appointee will be brought automatically into the Local Government Pension Scheme but has the opportunity to opt out. Contributions are 5.9% of salary.

7 The post is subject to a probationary period. This is seen as essentially a supportive time however unsatisfactory performance may lead to termination of contract. During the probation period 4 mandatory training units must be undertaken. The training sessions are Safeguarding Children, Health and Safety, Disability Discrimination Act and Equal Opportunities

8 Sick leave will be in accordance with the procedures laid down by the Strode College Board of Governors.
