Exeter prison was built in 1850as the Devon County Gaol. It is a category B remand prison accommodating both adult and Young Offenders (under 21years). Adults, YOs and Vulnerable Prisoners are held and educated in separate wings, with additional outreach education occurring in the gym, kitchen, workshops and library.
The fast turnover in the prison necessitates a curriculum based around short courses and modular accreditation.
The Education Department has cultivated good links with local FE colleges in the South West to encourage progression. A careers convention, accessible to all inmates, is run 6 monthly to introduce prisoners to colleges, trainer and the employment services.
Course provision includes ICT, Industrial Cleaning, Basic Skills, Cookery and Food Preparation and Business/Self Employment, Health & Safety, Food Hygiene, ESB.
