Erlestoke is an adult male, category C closed training prison, and the only prison in Wiltshire. It receives adult male prisoners from much of England and Wales, as well as from local prisons in South Wales and Bristol in particular. Within the Operational Capacity of 426, the population currently includes 30 life-sentenced prisoners. The average length of stay of non-lifers is 6 weeks.
Education is open 50 weeks per year. It is predominantly part-time and aimed at Key and Basic Skills provision. Vocational courses currently being offered are: Fork Lift Truck driving, NVQ Level 1 Catering, Carpentry, Health & Safety, Food Hygiene, Horticulture, Waste Awareness, BICSc.
70% of prisoners require drug rehabilitation treatment, 4% ESOL and 65% Basic Skills.
