Bristol is a category B local remand prison which first opened in 1883.

The prison is situated near the City Centre.

The prison holds a significant number of long term sentenced prisoners including lifers. However, most of the inmates held in the prison are serving short sentences or are on remand awaiting court appearances. The average length of stay on remand is 6 weeks and for sentenced prisoners (excluding lifers) from 6 months to 2 years.

Core curriculum subjects are taught at a wide range of levels from basic skills through to Open University courses. Provision is made for inmates to study minority subjects through accredited correspondence courses. Although accommodation in the department is limited, provision is made for the whole establishment through open learning, and by outreach work in prison workshops and wings. A workshop has recently been refurbished for educational use and is used for IT and Business Courses.

70% of prisoners require drug rehabilitation treatment, 10% have ESOL needs and 55% are assessed as needing Basic Skills courses.
