Student Support
Support for all
The Student Support Team offer a range of services designed to support all our students whilst they are at College.
Students can access advice and guidance from the Student Support Centre in the main Refectory from 8.45am-5.15pm Monday-Thursday and from 8.45am-4.45pm on Fridays. Please feel free to drop in if you require any help or advice. For more detailed advice you are advised to make an appointment with the most relevant member of staff. As an international student the Accommodation & Welfare Officer, based in the Student Support Centre, will be your primary contact.
Our team understand the pressures on students and the need to offer individually tailored support when required and are proud of the support it offers to students, especially those from overseas. We have one of the highest retention rates in the country which we believe reflects the success of student support in understanding and meeting student needs.
First Few Days
When you first arrive at the College you will need to enrol and pay the final instalment of your tuition fee. Once you have enrolled onto your course you will be given access to the College computer system which you can use for assignment work but also to contact family and friends. You will have free access to the internet including our new wireless network.
On the first day of term (6 September 2010) you will begin the main College induction programme and you will be given your timetable so that you know where you have to be and when. These first few days will include an induction fair and you will also be told where and when to obtain your textbooks.
This will be followed by an orientation session held by the Accommodation & Welfare Officer. During this session you will meet staff from the Skills for Life Team who will assess your level of English so that we know what support you will need. If you need advice about your course you can talk to members of our staff. We will give you information on opening a bank account, registering with a local doctor, registering with the police and anything else you need to start your new life. The Strode College student diary will be given to you and this provides lots of essential information including a campus map. You will be introduced to other new students, shown around the College and the town and very soon you will be making friends and settling into college life.
A welcome event for international students will be held during the first few weeks of term and this will provide another opportunity to meet staff, students from other countries and to make new friends.
Feeling a Little Homesick?
Don't worry it's natural. There are lots of people to help you - in the Student Support Centre, the Accommodation & Welfare Officer, your Personal Tutor and the Counsellors. Remember we are here to help.
