The course is for people with enthusiasm for, and an interest in, works of art from all periods, but who do not wish to study in a rigorously academic fashion. The aim is to provide you with the skills, knowledge and confidence to enable you to look at, analyse, interpret and appreciate a range of works of art.
After an introductory session in which the analytical skills will be considered, the artists, works and themes studied will be chosen partly by the students and partly by the tutor. The emphasis will be on enjoyment and appreciation of the works, enhanced by an understanding of their historical context.
In the first term we will cover art from the mediaeval period to the Early Renaissance; in the second term High Renaissance and Baroque; and in the Summer term we’ll look at 18th century onwards.
