- 19/07/11 - A Celebration of Learning and Achievement
Strode College recently celebrated the achievements of its 16 to 18 year old Foundation Learning and Hospitality students, and its students following 'Towards Independence' courses for adults with learning difficulties and disabilities.
Foundation Learning provides a more flexible, highly personalised approach to vocational learning for young people aged 16 to 18. It gives them the opportunity to learn about something they are interested in, for example horticulture or child care, in a way that engages them and helps them meet their full potential.
Strode's one and two year Hospitality courses are for young people who want to work in the hospitality and catering industry. Students learn about many aspects of the industry including supervision and budgeting and they develop practical skills in a training kitchen.
'Towards Independence' courses at Strode help adults with learning difficulties develop their skills and independence in a number of areas such as fitness and exercise, using computers and money matters whilst developing effective communication.
At the awards event in Strode Theatre on June 27 certificates were presented to all students by Strode's Deputy Principal Lynda Rose and College Governor Lesley Gagg. Entertainment was provided by a group of Foundation Learning students following a music option at college, and a buffet was provided by Strode's hospitality students.
Certificates were also presented to students who recently completed the Ten Tors Jubilee Challenge, with a bronze certificate presented to Strode lecturer Janice Wilcox for her work over many years supporting students taking part in the Ten Tors Jubilee Challenge.
Mandie Holloway, Deputy Head of Continuing Education at Strode said: "Creating a vibrant, engaging and supportive learning experience is essential to make sure that all students thrive and achieve their full potential. We are exceedingly proud of what each individual has achieved. This event celebrates each students' success whilst highlighting the importance of opportunity and the tools to make the most of it.'
