11/11/10 - Strode Students Dig for Britain
Strode News

Strode College Archaeology students spent the day excavating at the University of Bristol's Berkeley Castle site recenlty, under supervision of Sian Thomas, the site supervisor.  The site was recently featured on BBC's Digging for Britain (episode 3 The Saxons) presented by Dr Alice Roberts.

Site Director Dr Stuart Prior, who is a Lecture in Archaeological Practice at the University of Bristol and a former Strode A level Archaeology student, gave a talk on this unique Saxon nunnery site.

Metal detecting expert Peter Twinn, also an Archaeology student from the University of Bristol, discussed the controversial topic of metal detecting and archaeology with students, and students had an opportunity to try out metal detecting.

Also helping out were former Strode Archaeology Students Alexandra Scard, Will Pyne and Luke Loader, who are now studying at the University of Bristol.

Katherine Dray, Archaeology Subject Leader at Strode said: "This was a brilliant opportunity for our students to try out excavation and recording techniques, and a chance for A level students to discuss reading Archaeology at University with Bristol students."
