Introduction

Day Release Scheme

Most of our 14 - 16 learners are at secondary school and attend college on day per week to study for a vocational qualification, additional GCSEs or to obtain support from our Gifted and Talented programme.  Pupils can study hairdressing, engineering, IT and other qualifications and obtain support for Maths and languages.

Each partner school has its own scheme.  If you are interested in attending college while still at school, you should approach your Year Head in School to discuss your needs.

Not in School

A few young people aged 14 - 16 may not be at school for a number of reasons including for health, emotional, lifestyle or other issues.  The college is able to offer a very limited number of places, in special circumstances, to school pupils under 16 for whom school is no longer appropriate.  Recent examples include a school pupil who missed all of year 10 due to illness and came to college to study for a vocational qualification.  Other examples include home tutored individuals and those who have been out of mainstream schooling.

Under 16 pupils are not funded by the LSC.  The school will need to pay a fee to the college to cover tuition costs.  Where the school is not willing to pay fees, the family will be invoiced.  The college is not able to provide any financial support to under 16 full-time students or their families.

Evening Classes

Occasionally an under 16 will want to attend college for a GCSE or other course.  The school must give permission for this.  There are special rules relating to under 16s being on campus in the evening which must be followed.  In general, the under 16 must be supervised by an adult (relative or carer) while they are in class.  This usually means that the adult must enrol into the same class as the under 16.

Day Classes

Occasionally a school may suggest that a pupil should attend a day class.  The 14 - 16 Curriculum Manager should be contacted in the first instance on 01458 844488.
